The Wildcats’ bats were very quiet today scoring only Heidi Williams on a sacrifice fly by Becky Young in the top of the fourth bringing the score to 7-1, New Hampton. The hosts went on to score 2 more runs in the bottom of the 4th and things did not look good for KUA as they were looking at a 9-1 deficit. Then suddenly, momentum shifted, spirits were lifted and Kimball Union exploded for 4 runs in the 5th followed by 6 more in the 6th to take an 11-9 lead. KUA’s defense was perfect in the bottom of the 6th, taking down the New Hampton batters 1, 2, 3. Unfortunately, KUA could not score any insurance runs in their last at-bats and New Hampton’s first two batters hit back-to-back singles to make things interesting in the bottom of the 7th. Shortstop Kells Casey assisted in the next two outs catching a fly ball for one out and then making a routine play to first for the next. New Hampton’s Julia then rapped a double bringing in the tying runs. Campbell-Thompkins blasted a line drive up the middle and Casey almost got a glove on it to force extra innings but the ball scooted through and Julia scored to win the game in dramatic fashion.
Plainfield’s Ashlee Hadlock was productive from the plate collecting 3 hits. Other repeat hitters were Evie Whittemore (3 runs) and Becky Young (2 runs). Katie Firstenberger showed good patience at the plate by getting walked 3 times and recording 3 steals while also scoring a run. Whitney Paine went the distance, pitching very well in the pressure-filled final two frames.
