Around this time last year, we heard from Jerry in IT, avid concert enthusiast, about his top five local live music shows. It was a hit and so, naturally, we invited Jerry to write again this Fall. The 20+ year US Airforce veteran requested a slot close to election day.
We take Halloween seriously at Kimball Union. Each year, students and faculty alike get decked out for the annual Costume Parade at All School Meeting, where a panel of judges award costumes in a number of categories. Dressed as the sun as a part of a group costume, Scout ’19 remarks, “A lot of people go all out. It’s a really fun time to dress up with your friends. The freedom to let your childish, youthful side come out is easy here. There’s no judgement.”
Throughout the day on Friday, October 26, Tom and Lyn Lord’s classes met in Coffin Meeting room with guest speakers Nate Dominy, Professor of Anthropology, recent Dartmouth graduate Sam Gochman, and undergrad Naman Goyal from Dartmouth College’s Digital Arts Learning Initiative (DALI). KUA Students had the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality (VR) scenarios set in nature with the ability to switch views between the eyes of human beings and Tarsiers.
This week, we hear from faculty member Elizabeth Edwards. Ms. Edwards teaches in our Learning Center, is part of the freshmen team teaching Choices, is dorm head in Hall Farm, is a three-season coach for Cross Country, Nordic Skiing, and Track, and is an accomplished runner in her own right, recently completing Chicago marathon. Coley Hapeman, Kimball Union’s Director of Counseling Services, has introduced a Peer Educators network to the KUA community. These student leaders “work to promote the well-being of the community…to support our students’ journeys towards making informed and healthy life-style choices.”

Leadership has always been at Kimball Union's core, so when the word was formally added to our Mission Statement, it solidified its inclusion in our curriculum and throughout the entire KUA experience. During the spring trimester, students reflect on their strengths and identify ways they can commit to campus leadership positions.
The STEM Scholar program launches in support of students' passion for science, technology, engineering, and math. Over the last several years, Kimball Union has introduced two Scholar Programs that encourage students to organize their final two years around an area of study they find engaging and meaningful. So far, students can elect to participate in the Global Scholar and Arts Scholar programs. This spring, the Academy has introduced the third such program in STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

At Kimball Union, community is at the center of everything we do and for generations, community service has been a significant part of that tradition. Whether through KUAid annual benefit concerts, serving on the Meriden Volunteer Fire Department with the Fire Brigade, Play for a Cure Athletic Fund-raisers, or participating in the CHaD Hero 5K race, alumni throughout the ages will remember lending a hand. Early this Spring, Jingbang ’22 organized the Polar Plunge Fund-raiser, cleverly raising over $700 for Direct Relief and victims of Hurricane Irma by sourcing donations which sent Assistant Head of School David Weidman diving into the icy waters of Chellis Pond.

In Kimball Union Academy’s Flickinger Auditorium, a burst of color, song, and dance delighted audiences February 22 - 24. KUA performers showcased their talents in this year’s Winter musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” before taking the show on tour to the Kristin School in New Zealand.
