5 Steps to Start a College Search

Embarking on the journey to college is an exciting yet daunting task. KUA's Office of College Advising offers five ways to start the journey off on the right foot.
Embarking on the journey to college is an exciting yet daunting task. As a boarding school student, the prospect of choosing the right college can feel like an insurmountable challenge. The Kimball Union Academy (KUA) Office of College Advising helps students navigate their direction. “We may be a New England boarding school,” says Director of College Advising Gunnar Olson, “but we have a deep knowledge of colleges and universities across the country and around the world.”

At KUA, the junior year is one of self-exploration, where the College Advising Office helps each student examine who they are and understand their aspirations. The process is not one-size-fits-all. Instead, success is based upon the “fit” of the institution to the student’s abilities, interests, and aspirations.

Before delving into the vast sea of colleges, Olson recommends taking some time for self-reflection. What are your interests, strengths, and weaknesses? What are your academic and extracurricular passions? Understanding yourself will provide a solid foundation for your college search.

Consider your academic and career goals. Are you leaning towards a specific major or career path? Some colleges may excel in certain fields or have unique programs. Identify colleges that align with your ambitions. Here are five additional pieces to consider:

1. Location, Location, Location
Think about the environment in which you thrive. Do you prefer the hustle and bustle of a city, the tranquility of a small town, or the close-knit community of a rural setting? Location plays a crucial role in your college experience.

2. Not Too Big, Not Too Small
Colleges come in all sizes, from small liberal arts colleges to large research universities. Consider your preferences for class size, student-teacher ratio, and overall campus atmosphere. Each size has its own advantages; it's about finding the right fit for you.

3. Money Matters
Be realistic about your financial situation. Consider tuition costs, available scholarships, and financial aid options. Explore scholarships offered by both the college and external organizations. Understanding the financial aspect is crucial in making informed decisions.

4. Make the Trip
Whenever possible, visit the campuses of the colleges you're interested in. Attend information sessions, take a campus tour, and talk to current students. This firsthand experience will help you gauge the atmosphere and whether you can envision yourself thriving there. “See if any alumni from your school attend the colleges you’re visiting and ask if you can meet with them to hear their firsthand experience,” says Olson.

5. Seek a Sense of Belonging
Look for colleges that celebrate diversity and inclusivity. A diverse campus fosters a rich and vibrant community where you can learn from people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Seek schools where you believe you will feel a sense of belonging.
