The Boys’ Varsity Hockey Team defeated Cushing Academy 4-1 to win the NEPSAC Elite 8 Championship on Sunday, March 3.
The game, played at Harvard University’s Bright-Landry Hockey Center, attracted a large crowd who cheered the Wildcats on to victory. With the win, KUA has won four of the last seven New England titles awarded, with wins coming in 2017, 2018, 2019, and now 2024.
Corwith Simmers and Jack Sadowski each scored two goals, and goalie Blake McMeniman stopped 30 shots. Sadowski and Simmers each tallied in the first period, and KUA took a 2-0 lead to the locker room after one. Sadowski extended the lead to 3-0 on the powerplay in the second, but Cushing fought back with a goal to make the score 3-1 after two.
Midway through the second, Sadowski appeared to have scored a hat trick (and subsequent replay showed that he did), but his would-be third goal was waved off when the referee said the puck appeared to hit the post and not the net.
However, the Wildcats didn't relent and eventually added an empty netter late in the game when Simmers sent a puck the length of the ice and into the Cushing goal to seal the championship. Sam LeDrew finished with three assists for KUA, while Andrew O'Sullivan had one.
