The KUA Boys’ Ice Hockey Team is a proud member of the highly competitive Lakes Region League and holds a strong legacy within New England prep school hockey. The team has achieved numerous accomplishments, including multiple Lakes Region Championships, New England Prep Tournament appearances, and NEPSAC Elite Division Championships in 1982, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2024.
While competing for championships and postseason success is always an exciting achievement, the program’s primary focus is on the development of student-athletes aspiring to play at the collegiate level. KUA hockey alumni have gone on to compete at a variety of Division I and III schools, such as Boston College, Cornell University, Northeastern University, University of Vermont, Trinity College, Bowdoin College, and Middlebury College, as well as pursuing careers in professional hockey.
The foundation of the program’s success starts with its experienced coaching staff. KUA’s Head Coach is Tim Whitehead, a seasoned leader with a rich history in collegiate and prep hockey. Prior to joining KUA, Coach Whitehead spent 25 years coaching at the NCAA level, including head coaching stints at the University of Maine and UMass Lowell. His teams made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, including 4 Frozen Fours and 2National Championship games.

In the championship game of the NEPSAC Small School tournament, the Wildcats used a three-goal second period to earn a 5-3 win over Berkshire School on Sunday at UConn. Josh Phillips scored a first-period goal for KUA to open the scoring midway through the frame, but a Berkshire powerplay goal tied the game late in the period. In the second, Berkshire took a 2-1 lead just a minute in, but KUA tied the game on the next shift when a pressure forecheck caused Berkshire to mishandle the puck and send it off its own goalie and into the net. Phillips, the last Wildcat to touch the puck, got credit for the goal. Five minutes later, older brother Zach Phillips converted a pass from Corwith Simmers to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish. Simmers made it a 4-2 game just three minutes later. And though Berkshire got within a goal late in the second, Iain Olsen sealed the victory with six minutes to play when his wrist shot from the left circle sailed over the Berkshire goalie's shoulder. Goalie Blake McMeniman earned the win for KUA, kicking out 25 shots on the day.
With an 11-0 win over St. George's on Saturday in Meriden, the Wildcats have advanced to the Small School finals in the NEPSAC hockey playoffs. Mikael Tissier scored a hat trick in the first period as KUA took a 3-0 lead into the second period. From there, the Wildcats kept the foot on the gas and got second-period goals from Zach Phillips, CJ Watroba, Corwith Simmers, and Matthew Ross to take a 7-0 lead into the third. In the final frame, Simmers, Iain Olsen, Rowen Sang, and Alexis Gagne added to KUA's lead. Goalie Blake McMeniman pitched a shutout in his final game at Akerstrom Arena, stopping 27 shots in the process. The Small School finals (against either Berkshire or Holderness) is Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 at the University of Connecticut.
The Wildcats got two-goal games from four seniors in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Small School Tournament to beat Gunnery 8-1 on Wednesday in Meriden. KUA added three more goals in the final frame. Goalie Blake McMeniman stopped 21 shots for the win. The Wildcats now host St. George's in the semifinals on Saturday in Meriden.
